We were back for the seventh year to enjoy beautiful Junks Hole Bay this past winter. While relaxing, we did our usual dialing around. Anguilla has a group of exciting new stations on the air! The Anguilla stations have a decidedly Caribbean flavor. The frequencies are tuned to British standards. Nearby St. Martin stations have a more eclectic sound, and broadcast under the guidelines of both France and The Netherlands. Be prepared. If you want the most variety, bring a good digital tuning
international radio such as the Grundig Yacht Boy. When all else fails, you can tune in the BBC or Voice of America.

As I've also already argued here, this is anything but certain. While it is much easier to answer this question in terms of operating system, application server, database server, and the web server stack, open source still has some ways to go before staking the claim to business packaged applications. In fact, Ventana states later on in the research that the majority of respondents were unsure or doubtful whether open source BI would be feature-rich enough for their needs.

On the other hand, there is no doubt, as the study says, that interest in Open Source BI is growing. Furthermore, most organizations that are deploying or have already deployed open-source BI are likely to continue increasing this footprint.

As can be expected, Ventana reports that cost is the primary driver in this trend, although about a quarter of respondents stated that they expect that the total cost of ownership would be a wash. I wonder whether the profile of these one quarter of respondents is one of a current user of open source BI or not; this would be an interesting statistic to ponder. It is also interesting that most of respondents considering or using open source BI already have commercial BI software in house. This would point to an audience that knows what they want.

Are the commercial open source companies positioned to benefit from this? When companies decide to purchase maintenance, support, and consulting services, this indicates a serious commitment to open source BI on their part. According to the study, there is great upside potential from where things are now (which is my way of saying the glass is half-full), since respondents have made such purchases in less then 20% of case
